Poland conforms to the guidelines from of the Bologna Process in European Area of Higher Education, along with 29 other countries. Institutions of higher education in Poland have implemented the degree system based on the three-cycle structure and the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The Diploma Supplement facilitates international recognition of completed education and acquired qualifications.

1st cycle - studies of two types, the Polish equivalent of the Bachelor's degree (BA, BSc): studies leading to the professional title of “licencjat”, of 3 to 4 years' duration, studies leading to the professional title of “inżynier” (Engineer, in the field of engineering, agriculture or economics) of 3,5 to 4 years' duration.

2nd cycle - studies of 1.5 to 2 years' duration - the Polish equivalent of the Master's degree (MA, MSc), leading to the professional title of “magister” or an equivalent degree, accessible for graduates of first cycle studies.

Long-cycle studies of 4.5 to 6 years' duration - the Polish equivalent of the Master's degree (MA, MSc) leading to the professional title of “magister” or an equivalent degree; 11 fields of study offer long-cycle programmes only: acting, art conservation and restoration, canon law, dentistry, law, medical analysis, medicine, production and photography, pharmacy, psychology and veterinary medicine.

3rd cycle - studies of 3 to 4 years - doctoral programmes - leading to a PhD degree, provided by university-type schools as well as some research institutions. The PhD degree is awarded to candidates who submit and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation before the thesis committee and pass the doctoral examination.
